How Far in Advance
to Book Your Ski Holiday in Italy

Published in december 2025

When travellers ask me, “How far in advance should I book my ski holiday in Italy?”, they are really asking how to secure the right village, the right accommodation, the right snow conditions, the right price, and something that suits their skills, budget and overall travel style. Some people want a relaxed ski break, others dream of a luxury ski holiday, and many simply want the best value at the best time.

There is no single straight answer because every ski trip is different. But after helping Australians go on a ski holiday for many years, I can honestly say this: the earlier you start planning, the better your experience will be.

And the very first thing we must secure is your accommodation. Everything else, like ski rental, lift passes or ski lessons, can wait a little longer. I often explain that Italian ski villages are not huge and the beds are limited, so getting your accommodation sorted well in advance makes everything else easier and gives you complete peace of mind.

If you still need to decide on your ski resort or compare beautiful locations like Livigno or Val Gardena, early planning gives us space to talk properly through your options for the perfect ski experience.

Why Booking Your Ski Holiday Early Makes a Big Difference

Italian ski villages are charming, compact and incredibly popular. This is why early planning shapes your entire holiday, especially if you want the best resort options or a particular style of accommodation.

Booking your accommodation early gives you far more choice and flexibility, such as:

  • More choice of apartments, ski chalets and hotels
  • Flexibility with bedding layouts
  • Chance to secure rare three-bedroom apartments
  • Better access to your preferred ski area
  • Fewer compromises
  • Smoother overall holiday planning
  • A relaxed feeling once your stay is confirmed

Large apartments are always the first to get booked because Italian homes traditionally have smaller floor plans. So if you need extra bedrooms, a certain layout or cannot share beds, we simply need more time. Early booking also helps secure the best ski terrain and gives you time to consider things like après ski, transfers and where you want your day on the slopes to begin.

When to Book Depending on Your Travel Dates

Different periods of the ski season behave differently, so the ideal time to book depends on your holiday dates and how flexible you are with accommodation.
A festive winter decoration marking the Christmas ski season
Christmas and New Year
Book 10–12 months in advance
This is the busiest, most expensive and most tightly booked period. Returning guests often secure the same accommodation every year, so availability becomes very limited. If someone contacts me late in the year, I am always honest that we would be relying on last-minute bookings or cancellations. If your dream is a festive holiday, early booking is essential.
Skiers enjoying quiet, open slopes in the Dolomites on a sunny January day
Early to Mid January
Book 6–9 months ahead
Italian school holiday break ends on 6 January, so the following week becomes calmer and more affordable. This period offers great value, quieter slopes, and plenty of snow.
February peak snow season in the Dolomites, with long sunny days and excellent conditions.
February Peak Snow Season
Book 6–9 months in advance
February truly delivers the best ski conditions in the Alps. The longer days and excellent snow conditions make this a favourite for couples, intermediates and anyone wanting the best ski window of the year.
Spring sunshine and fresh snow — the feel of March skiing in Italy.
Spring Skiing, March and Easter
Book 3–6 months in advance
March is sunny, warm and relaxed. Accommodation is very achievable unless Easter skiing coincides with late March. If Easter falls later, such as mid-April, Europeans tend to move on to warmer destinations, leaving space for visitors. This is a great time to enjoy skiing in Italy and combine your ski holiday with broader travel across Italy or skiing in Europe.

Typical booking patterns

What Usually Books Out First in Italian Ski Resorts

Accommodation is always the most time-sensitive element. The things that disappear quickly are:

  • Self-catering apartments
  • Three-bedroom apartments
  • Family suites
  • Chalet-style stays
  • Dolomites properties
  • Boutique hotels with special layouts

Bedding configuration matters more than people expect. Italian apartments often have double beds and fewer bathrooms, so families with teens or groups who cannot share beds benefit from booking early.

If you're considering iconic Dolomites locations like Corvara, Canazei or Selva — home of the famous Sellaronda — it’s best to book your ski holiday early.

These can be booked later:

  • Ski school
  • Lift passes
  • Ski rental
  • Transfers

Lift passes can have early booking offers, but in many Italian regions the euro price is the same whether purchased months in advance or three days before arrival. The only thing that may change is the exchange rate.
